Big News!

Thank you thank you thank you for your prayers and thoughts over the last few days! We are so happy to report that Christman and Djoudly are both recovering beautifully...

Checkups will be done on Friday! If all is well, back to Haiti they will go. Also, it was decided this week that baby Todd will be returned to Haiti without surgery this trip. A thyroid issue was discovered and the doctors decided it will be best to get that under control and let him get a little older, and then do the operation. Please continue to pray for him and Ciara both as they hang on until the next round of surgeries in November.

So at this point, everyone is headed back to Haiti except Kessy, Christman and his mom, and Djoudly and his aunt. Please pray with us for a speedy return to Haiti... it is hard for them all to be out of their comfort zone. They want to go home!

In other news with Chadasha.... Isaac Roberts has an announcement to make:

As many of you know, this has been an excrutiatingly long and tiring process for the Roberts, but we know that God is faithful in Him time, and it is PERFECT! Isaac will be going home to America as soon as a flight can be booked. Praise the Lord!

And you've probably heard, but there is a tropical storm threatening the island of Haiti and the DR... Isaac is it's name, ironically. Prayers for safety and security for everyone in both countries are much appreciated... specifically for our friends in tent camps whos homes will be severely impaired by heavy rains. Peace, Love, and Jesus people! :)

August Heart Surgeries!

As is usually necessary, we must begin this post with an apology that it has been so long since our last post. The summer in Haiti has consisted of tons of teams and friends joining us to serve, and hopefully in the sorta near future we will share more about that. Today, we wanted to let you know that we have another round of heart surgeries taking place in the Dominican Republic this week! Sara and Kessy, 2 of the fabulous Chadasha staff, have taken 5 children and 5 guardians to our heart apartment in Santiago, DR to be evaluated by the ICHF staff and then potentially receive life saving surgeries to fix congenital heart defects that are or will severely limit their quality of life. And now, we want to introduce you to these precious kids and following each picture will be an update on the surgery status.

This is Djoudly. He is 6 years old and had surgery today! Please be in prayer for him as he recovers and his aunt who traveled as his guardian.

Ciara is 5 years old and is our sickest child (you can see the blue discoloration of her lips in this picture from a lack of oxygen). She traveled all the way to the DR and upon arrival and initial examination, the doctors decided they don't have the equipment or skill necessary to do her complicated surgery this time. She will be put on the list to hopefully have surgery in November. Please please pray that she holds on until then. God is able! She and her mother will be headed back to Haiti tomorrow to wait. Prayers!!

This is Rachama.. she is actually 4 years old (I think in the picture she was trying for a peace sign haha). She has the opposite story of Ciara in that upon examination, the doctors decided her congenital heart defect will cure itself as she grows. Praise the Lord! She and her mother are already back in Haiti!

This spunky little fellas name is Christman. He is 2 years old and had surgery today! Please pray for a quick and speedy recovery, and for stamina for his mom as she cares for him.

And last but not least, meet baby Todd. He is 6 months old and has Downsyndrome as well as a heart defect (which is often a package deal). Isn't he precious?!

Okay, so now that you know them, we want to show you pictures from after surgery today:

Djoudly after surgery... he'll be spending the night in the ICU recovery room tonight. Hopefully by tomorrow afternoon they will have pulled all his tubes and such and will have him in the step down unit. The doctors say he did great and should recover beautifully.

And this is Christman after surgery. Obviously disoriented, hurting, and scared... not so spunky as earlier, but awake and doing great! Doctors gave the same report on him and said he should be out of there in no time.

Please pray for comfort and rest for these sweet kids as they recover, and for the guardians, who sleep in very uncomfortable chairs or patient beds, eat packed lunches and dinner, and shower rarely over the course of their hospital stays because they don't want to leave their babies. Oh, and none of them speak Spanish which makes it increasingly frustrating and uncomfortable for them. Pray for strength and comfort!

As of now, we do not know the surgery schedule for next week. But we will be updating here as often as we can with new information and pictures. As we did last time around, let us know where you're praying from so we can encourage the patients and families and let them know they are loved. Obviously, we would love to see these kids physically healed for the rest of their lives. But more than that, the reason we do anything we do, we want to see them and their families come to know Jesus if they don't already. Please pray for that above all!

Bottom line of this part of the ministry, every other part, and every part of life really is that even if people have full bellies and know English and if kids have fixed hearts but none of them know Jesus, it's all in vain. Be reminded of this truth today!

a miracle!

Most of you have probably seen or heard already, but we are beyond excited and so absolutely blessed that Edna is awake and recovering well! The doctors were first unsure she would live long enough to get into the OR, then unsure she would live through surgery, then unsure she would live through the night after surgery, then unsure she would ever wake up. And then, she did.

So please pray for stamina and content hearts. Also, pray for Christ to be made famous there, in the apartment, at the hospital, in Santiago, and in the DR!

In case anybody missed the morning update today, this is where all of our children scheduled for heart surgery this round stand:

--Edna- surgery complete as of yesterday afternoon... they found further complications once they began the operation, and the surgery was very hard on her. She is the sickest of our children getting surgery this round. They are keeping her sedated to let her body rest more before waking her. They say that every hour she is still alive is a blessing... it's one of God's sweet miracles that she made it through the night and is continuing to recover. Please continue to pray!! She has a hard battle ahead still.

--Bethsaida- surgery complete as of 9:30 last night, and today she is up, dressed, and walking around. Amazing!!

Joseph is the other child who was scheduled to potentially have surgery this round. We were not able to get him to Santiago in time, and he will be first on the list for surgeries next round which should be in approximately 3 months.

We know without a shadow of a doubt that prayer is what is carrying these kids through these operations, and Chadasha and ICHF through this round of surgeries. We are beyond blessed by the outcry of prayer that has been lifted up from the following places:

Weekend Update from Santiago

Hello everyone! The weekends in Santiago are pretty chill due to the fact that they don't perform surgeries on Saturday or Sunday. Perfect time for our staff there to get some pictures taken and perfect time for us to update you on the AMAZING things our God is doing in the lives of these children.

First of all, great news! Eveder has been discharged from the hospital and is back at the apartment until Friday when he will go back for a checkup, and then if all is well he will be ready to go back to Haiti, good as new!

And now, more great news! Wadson is recovering beautifully in the recovery unit. He is also getting some great loving from Chadasha representative, Jenny, who got to be present in the OR during his surgery! :)

The two children, Joseph and Edna, who are still in Haiti are still trying to get to Santiago in time to have surgery. By the time most children with heart defects find Chadasha and the ICHF, they don't have much time left unless they receive surgery as soon as possible. It is so vital that those kids get to Santiago... please pray with us that this can be accomplished early next week.

Eveder made it out of surgery yesterday with flying colors and is recovering nicely in the ICU. He's alert and doing good. Doctors say he should never have to have another surgery! Thank God!!

another round of hearts!

Hello everyone! We wanted to give you a quick update and let you know that part of our team is currently back in Santiago, Dominican Republic, for another round of heart surgeries! Praise God for this amazing opportunity to save the physical lives of Haitian children, as well as the incredible chance to teach them who Jesus is and what His love looks like at this crucial time in their lives. We don't have any pictures just yet, but they will come, don't worry. Right now, let me introduce you to the kids and tell you what we have as a schedule so far:

1. Houge is a 5 year old boy who is at the apartment in Santiago now and will be having surgery sometime next week.
2. Bethsaida is a 17 year old girl who is at the apartment and will also be having surgery next week.
3. Eveder is an 11 year old boy who is currently in the OR as I type having open heart surgery. Please lift him up!
4. Ruth DJ Beldor is a 16 month old baby girl who went to Santiago, had an ECHO done and they said her problem should fix itself as she grows... so back to Haiti she went and we are praying for her to continue to improve on her own.
5. Edna is a 14 year old girl who will be traveling to Santiago later this week for surgery next week.
6. Joseph is a 2 year old boy who will also be traveling later this week to Santiago.
7. Wadson is a 10 year old boy who will be traveling with Edna and Joseph later this week as well.

So, that puts us with 1 kid already back home in Haiti, 3 that haven't left yet, 2 at the apartment, and 1 in the OR right now. We will try to keep updates coming here and on our facebook page. Also, we hope to have some pictures up later today! Thank you so much for your support.

2/19-2/29

Praise the Lord!! All of our heart patients are doing great! It was discovered a few days after arriving in Santiago that Rutherchy has sickle cell anemia and that is what is effecting his quality of life. They sent him back to Haiti and we are working on a medication regimen to treat his sickle cell, and he won't need heart surgery for a few more years. Roosevelt, Sophonie, and Guyito are all out of surgery and doing great! Roosevelt and Sophonie are back at the apartment and will hopefully be able to travel back to Haiti on Saturday, and Guyito is recovering from a pericardial effusion [fluid around the heart] and will be back to Haiti asap!

Also this week we were blessed to have a team from Buffalo, NY join us to serve! It consisted of an amazing pediatrician and 5 energetic high school students. It was awesome to get to serve the people of Haiti with them at various medical clinics throughout Port au Prince.

So thankful for willing hearts and hands! This team began our "team season" so we look forward to serving with different people from all over for the next few months. Stay tuned to check out all the crazy awesome stuff God is doing through Chadasha in Haiti! :)

Heart Patients [February 2012]

This is a quick update of all of our heart patients who are currently in Santiago, DR to have surgery!

Sophonie [15], Guyito [16], and Rutherchy [9]

SOPHONIE is 15 years old and is one of 9 children. Her youngest sibling is 5 years old, and her oldest is 19. Her mother doesn't have a passport and couldn't get one in time, so she traveled here with a family friend who is signing the papers and has taken on the role of legal guardian for this trips purposes. She has known she has a heart problem for 4 years, and hasn't been to school since she found out. She is quiet and reserved, and beautiful. She doesn't get into playing very much, and does things that most 15 year old Haitian girls do like cook, clean, wash clothes, and keep the house basically. Her surgery is scheduled for Tuesday, and she will be having a valve replacement. The valve is currently being shipping here from America, so please pray with us that it gets here safely and in a timely manner so that she can get this surgery she desperately needs. She's excited to be able to go back to school when she gets better.

GUYITO is 16 years old and less than 5 feet tall. He has known for a while that he needs heart surgery, and he and his mother have actually traveled all the way to Santiago before and they weren't able to do the operation that he needed at the time. His mom is here with him again. He is energetic and very affectionate, and he eats A LOT! His surgery is scheduled for Monday, and he is having an operation on one of his valves as well although it's unclear exactly what they are going to do to it at this time. He has told me every day how excited he is to have his operation, because he wants to grow taller and fatter. His mom is excited because she wants him to be able to go back to school. His mom is by far the most nervous of our guardians, although Guyito himself dances and sings about his operation he is so happy to be getting it.

RUTHERCHY is 9 years old and lives on an island of Haiti with his mother. She couldn't get away, so his uncle traveled with him to Santiago. He hasn't been to school in a few years because of his heart problem. Upon arrival and blood work here, it was discovered that he has sickle cell anemia. After a few days of discussion and debate, the doctors decided that his sickle cell is his main problem, and that he does not need open heart surgery right now. After surgery, he would require medication and followup care which will be hard for him to obtain on the island, and there is always the increased risk for infection and complications. They said that the sickle cell is the problem that is effecting his quality of life, and if we can get that under control he shouldn't need surgery! Praise the Lord! So we sent him and his uncle back to Haiti today where we will get him set up for sickle cell treatment [it's a manageable disease] and then he can go back to his mom, and back to school!

Roosevelt [16]

ROOSEVELT is by far our sickest patient. He traveled here with his uncle and a nurse and they came a few days later than the rest of us because they needed more time to make travel plans. He went straight to the hospital and stayed there 2 nights before he had surgery. The doctors said he is very very sick, and they cannot do a lifesaving surgery... just one that will buy him some time. They waited the 2 days to get him a bit stronger, and today they were able to do the operation. When he went in to the OR, the doctors told us there was a 60% chance he would come out alive, and a 40% chance that he wouldn't. Our God is Mighty, and he is now in recovery and awake asking for water. Praise Jesus! They were able to clear out the vessels of his heart, but they say that even with this operation he most likely only has about 6 months left to live. But we know that our Jesus is bigger than any heart problem, and if Roosevelt is meant to live for longer than 6 months then he will! We are excited to see how God moves.

This is all of the kids here for this trip. We are posting updates here as soon as we get new information. We know that these kids need their physical lives saved, but our ultimate goal is for this to be a tiny part of a much bigger picture of how they come to know Christ and live their lives for Him! How quickly time goes! We are doing our best to keep people informed of whats going on over here in Port au Prince, but the days get away from us more often than not. Anyway... even when our world is like shifting sand and we are inconsistent with this blog, praise the Lord that He never changes and never will, and He is infinitely consistent!

Last week we had a precious family visit us who are friends of the Roberts. Our house was full of life and love with Evonne, Richard, Hallie, and Braiden all getting to experience Haiti for the first time. It was exciting to see how God worked in their lives while they were here. They also happened to be here for Super Bowl Sunday! Even though we are in Haiti, we try to stay in the loop and participate in American things as much as possible. So, a Super Bowl party we had!

We welcomed a new intern this past week, which means we currently have 2 interns serving in Haiti with us. We are beyond excited to see how God continues to grow this part of the Chadasha ministry.If you or someone you know is interested in applying for the Intern Program, click here.

Another praise... Wilna [a close friend of Chadasha's] delivered a beautiful, healthy baby boy yesterday! There were mild complications and she ended up requiring a c-section, but mom and baby are both healthy and happy now, Praise to Jesus!

And finally, as many of you know, Chadasha is partnered with the International Children's Heart Foundation and roughly 4 times a year we get to take up to 5 Haitian children to Santiago, Dominican Republic, to have lifesaving heart surgeries. Click here to view stories from our last trip. Our first trip this year is taking place right now, and our staff plus kids and guardians left yesterday and have safely arrived in Santiago. The surgeries will be done over the next 2 weeks. Please keep the children, guardians, doctors, and staff in your prayers! We will be updating the blog with progress reports as often as possible. "REJOICE always, PRAY continually, GIVE THANKS in all circumstances, for this is God's Will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 

As a ministry and as individuals with Chadasha, we are all striving to remember this verse and focus our lives around it daily. If we believe that these words are true, and we do because we believe that the Bible is Truth, we have a lot of changes to be making! Rejoicing ALWAYS is hard. Praying CONTINUALLY is hard. And giving thanks in ALL CIRCUMSTANCES? This seems outrageous! But the Word tell us that it is the Will of God for us! That makes us excited!

All of our American staff is back on the ground here in Port au Prince. Everyone got nice and rested up over the holiday in America, and we are back to serving in Haiti with renewed minds and open hearts, anxiously waiting to see what God has for us as Chadasha this year.

We have a few announcements to make... I will try to be as to-the-point as possible. :)

Chadasha Trip Report - Pediatric Heart Surgeries (Nov. 2011)

We've published an extensive report on our experiences during the pediatric heart surgery mission trip to Santiago in November of 2011.

The trip was an absolute success as we were able to sponsor the heart surgeries of five Haitian children. Without these operations, the children would have both a low-quality and short life.

11/27-12/4

Outside of our Guest House here in Haiti there are random cows always roaming. We've no idea who they belong to, and have been warned that if we mess with one we will definitely find out. So, we choose to remain unaware of the owners :) The cows eat the grass and stand in the road and moo periodically, just kinda mosey around like cows do. They mean different things to different people... visitors are amazed that they are just walking around and think they're hilarious. Our drivers get frustrated because sometimes it takes getting out of the car and running at them to make them get out of the driveway. And we with the more whimsical hearts get overly excited when we see a new calf has been born.

The new calves are almost always brown with a white spot on their forehead. We can tell they are brand new to this earth because their spots are bright white, indicating that the Haitian dust hasn't had time to tarnish them yet. It appears that once they have been around for a few hours, the dust has turned their spot and it is more of a greyish, no longer looking extra clean and spotless. We are learning as a ministry that we, too have a bright white spot that we call our soul. And the brokenness of this world and the sin in our hearts tarnish it on a daily and hourly and secondly basis. But praise the Lord that He washes us bright and clean and good as new every single time we ask for forgiveness. We never have to live with a greying soul, because His promise is clear:
Though your sins are like crimson, they shall be washed white as snow.   Isaiah 1:18

We have been learning this daily together, and are striving to show other people what an amazing promise this is. Thank God that we have this promise to cling to, otherwise our life would be hopeless and our efforts all in vein.

This week we celebrated a literal miracle from God. Many of you remember Baby KenKen who we have been looking after. He is almost 1 year old and has been battling AIDS his entire life. He has been in and out of the hospital for months, and just a few weeks ago I wrote that it looked as though his life was nearing the end. We began praying for his mother and father, for comfort and peace and a quick passing with little suffering. God reminded us how little faith we have when, to our absolute surprise, KenKen was discharged from the hospital on Thursday! He has gained weight, and is actually smiling, laughing, cooing, and attempting to stand on his own with little assistance. It is literally a miracle, and we have been so amazed at all God has taught us through KenKen's life. Thank you for your prayers!

Another praise story: Our 5th and final heart patient has returned from Santiago, healthy and happy!! That means all of our children came through the lifesaving surgeries and will be forever changed because of the people that God put in their lives. We are so thankful that we as Chadasha were given the opportunity to show them and their families the love and healing power of Christ! Praise God!

Our English and Bible classes have continued, and Chadasha's Little Hands and Feet is doing great as well. We as a ministry are being led by the Lord to TRUST Him to do things that we cannot do ourselves. We are learning that it is only when we trust God to provide something that we cannot obtain oursleves that He shows us His faithfulness in providing for us. We cannot know His love and mercy until we NEED His love and mercy. We invite you to reevaluate with us what Faith really means, and if you are anything like us, when you start trying to identify what you are actually trusting God to do today [with no plan of how to carry it out yourself "just in case"] you may learn, as we did, that you are way off target and really need to get back to genuinely trusting in the Lord.

Thankful this week for truth revealed, hearts healed, and God's glory proclaimed!

11/13-11/27

First and foremost, we must apologize sincerely for missing last weeks post! Our blog writer was in transition between countries last weekend and she's not very good at delegation [hey.. everybody's got weaknesses, right?] We will do our best not to let that happen again!

These past 2 weeks we have been graced with the presence of some very happy adoptive parents who got to spend some time with their kids and take a few steps to advance their adoptions on the Haiti side. Check out the pictures below:

As you can see, the Guest House has been busy busy and full of life! We LOVE that God has allowed us to play a part in letting these families spend time together. As the holidays near, we ask for special prayers for our adoptive parents in the States.. we can't begin to imagine what it's like to not have all your children home for the holidays. But, we all know that Our God is greater!

In other news with Chadasha, we have welcomed a new intern, Carley! We are so excited to have her serving with us for about 4 weeks. She has absolutely fallen in love with baby KenKen, who to our amazement and only by the miraculous power of God is doing better and better, smiling and laughing again, and is set to discharge from the hospital later this week!

Oh, and the other huge news! God has graciously brought 4 out of 5 of our heart patients back to Haiti good as new! The other one, Pricile, had some minor complications and should be back this week sometime. Praise be to God for healing these children! When we picked them up at the bus station, Ysnadaire who is 11 was all decked out in new clothes his brother had bought him as a reward for being so brave. Prior to surgery, he couldn't even go up one flight of stairs without getting short of breath and having to rest. I hugged him and I said "How do you feel? You're not sick anymore!" He looked at me with bright, excited eyes and he said "Chelsey, I can walk! I can walk!" It brought tears to my eyes... the absolutely joy that this child is going to be able to LIVE now without the limitations of a heart defect. This is such a perfect picture, friends, of what Christ does for us when we become believers. He enters our lives, changes us on the inside, and allows us to do things we couldn't do before, and LIVE like we never could before!

One more quick thing.. you know we have been teaching English and doing a Bible Study on Saturday mornings at Koriah [to about 150-200 people]. Well, this past week we began English classes and doing a Bible Study at a second tent camp! It's closer to our house, so we are able to go there twice a week [on Mondays and Wednesdays]! There we teach about 50 kids and adults, with the hopes of growing if God allows! We are being continually amazed at what God can do if we just say "yes" when we hear Him calling us to do something new.

With this past week being Thanksgiving, we feel it only appropriate to say Thank You. Thank you to you who are reading this blog. Thank you to you who are committed to praying for Chadasha. Thank you to you who are supporting Chadasha financially. Thank you to you who have physically come and served with Chadasha. And Thank you Jesus for leading, guiding, and working this ministry for Your fame and for Your glory on a daily basis. We are truly blessed as Children of the King!
